  36.       Introduction
  37.       MP3 Collector is a fast and flexible MP3 Database, ID3 Tag 
  38.       Editor, MP3 Renamer and Playlist Manager.
  39.       The MP3 database system is based on the popular Music 
  40.       Collector and Movie Collector products. It creates a 
  41.       database by scanning your harddisks, CDs and network for 
  42.       MP3 files. You can group, sort and filter the resulting 
  43.       database in a configurable Explorer-type interface, even 
  44.       when the actual MP3 files are not available.
  45.                
  46.       Other features: supports .M3U and .PLS playlist formats, 
  47.       configurable list printing, export to ASCII and HTML, 
  48.       graphical statistics.

  53.       Collection Manager, tracks grouped on Location, Artist and 
  54.       Album    
  55.       Collection Manager, tracks grouped on Genre and Artist  The 
  56.       main screen works like the Windows Explorer, with some 
  57.       differences. The left side of the screen shows a "tree", 
  58.       the right side shows a "list". The list always shows the 
  59.       contents or "sub-items" of the selected item in the tree.
  60.       The tree shows a structured view of your database. It 
  61.       contains three "root" items: Collection, Playlist and MP3 
  62.       Explorer.
  63.       The Collection item represents the database itself, and the 
  64.       items below it represent the MP3s in the database, possibly 
  65.       grouped in folders (e.g. Genre folders).
  66.       The Playlist item represents your current playlist, and the 
  67.       files in it are shown in the list.
  68.       The MP3 Explorer item represent your system, similar to My 
  69.       Computer on your desktop. By navigating through this tree, 
  70.       you can select folders and see the MP3 files they contain.
  71.       Note: the difference between the Collection and MP3 
  72.       Explorer view is that the MP3 Explorer is a 'live' view of 
  73.       your system, whereas the Collection is a 'virtual' view 
  74.       containing files which may not be present (eg on a CD-ROM 
  75.       which is not in the drive) and that can be grouped in ways 
  76.       other than the folder structure on your disk.

  82.       Adding MP3 files to the database (Collection)
  83.       To add files on your system to your collection, use the 
  84.       "Add to Collection" function. When the Add to Collection 
  85.       screen opens, the selected folder or files are scanned. Any 
  86.       subfolders are scanned as well, so this may take some time 
  87.       if there are a large number of folders or files. When the 
  88.       scanning is finished, the files are shown in the preview 
  89.       list at the lower half of the screen. This shows how the 
  90.       files will be added to the collection, i.e. the values that 
  91.       will be used to create the collection entries. You can 
  92.       choose which fields are shown with the "Columns" button.
  93.       The Location field shows the location that will be used for 
  94.       all files in the preview. You can change it with the 
  95.       elipsis button, or you can select another existing location 
  96.       from the dropdown list.
  97.       When you press OK, the files are added to the collection if 
  98.       they are not yet present, otherwise the existing collection 
  99.       entries will be updated with the values shown in the 
  100.       preview.

  105.       Edit Track screen  If you want to make changes to an 
  106.       existing track in your database, select it in the main 
  107.       screen and use the Edit Track command (Edit menu) to open 
  108.       it. You can then type new values for the fields. The fields 
  109.       are grouped into tabs to keep the interface manageable.
  110.       To edit multiple tracks at once, use drag and drop in the 
  111.       main screen. If you drag a file from one collection folder 
  112.       to another, the corresponding lookup field will 
  113.       automatically be changed. For example, if you drag a file 
  114.       from the Year folder "1998" to the folder "1999", the year 
  115.       field of the MP3 will be automatically changed from "1998" 
  116.       to "1999".

  118.       ID3 Tag Editor
  119.       The tag editor allows you to change the ID3v1 and ID3v2 
  120.       tags of a single file or batch of files together. Most 
  121.       ID3v2 tags are supported, although some of the more exotic 
  122.       ones are left out to keep the complexity down. The tags can 
  123.       be updated with data retrieved from the filename, existing 
  124.       tags or manual input.
  125.       The tagger has a preview that allows you to review the new 
  126.       tags before they are updated.
  127.       Changes to the tags are updated in the collection 
  128.       automatically, if the file is present in the collection. 
  129.       This helps to keep the collection synchronized with the 
  130.       actual files.

  132.       Note: Read-only files are indicated with a red icon in the 
  133.       preview, writable files have a green icon.

  135.       In the MP3 Explorer, you can use the File Properties 
  136.       function on individual files. The File Properties screen 
  137.       shows the MPEG information at the bottom, and allows you to 
  138.       edit the tags or rename the file directly.

  145.                
  146.       Parse Formats screen  To extract data from a filename, or 
  147.       to rename a file, "filename formats" are used that describe 
  148.       the contents of the filename. With the Filename Formats 
  149.       functions you can add, edit or remove formats for parsing 
  150.       (extraction) and renaming. A number of often-used formats 
  151.       are included by default, which you can extend to suit your 
  152.       own filename conventions.
  153.       When extracting information, MP3 Collector tries to find 
  154.       the filename format that best matches the files, by trying 
  155.       them all and seeing which one can find most fields. The 
  156.       automatic selection may use the wrong format if it cannot 
  157.       determine which one is better. For example, a filename 
  158.       "Hello - Lionel Richie.mp3" will match both the "Title - 
  159.       Artist" and "Title - Album" formats, since it has no way of 
  160.       knowing that the first one is correct. If multiple formats 
  161.       are applicable, the one listed first in the Filename 
  162.       Formats screen is used. You can change the order of the 
  163.       formats in that screen by using the Move Up and Move Down 
  164.       buttons.

  166.       MP3 File Renamer
  167.       MP3 Collector can batch rename files to any format, using 
  168.       the available tag or database information. Again, a preview 
  169.       shows the changes before they are made. The file renamer 
  170.       allows you to change the filename of a single file or batch 
  171.       of files together. This is done by specifying a format that 
  172.       the new filenames should have, e.g. "Artist - Index - 
  173.       Title".  
  174.       Changes to the filenames are updated in the collection 
  175.       automatically, if the file is present in the collection. 
  176.       This helps to keep the collection synchronized with the 
  177.       actual files.
  178.       The "Filename Format" field determines how the files will 
  179.       be renamed. You can see what the new filenames will look 
  180.       like in the New Filename column of the preview.

  184.       Note: The small check or red cross in front of a file 
  185.       indicates whether or not the renaming will succeed. The red 
  186.       cross is a warning indicating that the file is read-only, 
  187.       or the new filename already exists, or there is not enough 
  188.       information available for the selected Filename Format. 
  189.       E.g, when the format is "%ix %t" but the file has no Track 
  190.       Index value, the resulting filename for title "Hello" would 
  191.       be "[Track Index] Hello.mp3". This is a valid filename, but 
  192.       probably not what you want.

  198.       Filter screen  All lists have "incremental search" 
  199.       functions. Just sort the list on the field you want to 
  200.       search on, then start typing the first letter of the value 
  201.       you are looking for. While you type the selection will jump 
  202.       to the first item that matches.
  203.       MP3 Collector also allows you to "filter" the items that 
  204.       are displayed in the main screen, making it only show a 
  205.       subset of the database, instead of the entire database.

  207.       Statistics
  208.       The Statistics screen shows a graphical overview of your 
  209.       collection. You can view statistics charts for Artists 
  210.       (shown here), Genres, Locations, Labels etc...
  211.       You can also see information like the total length and size 
  212.       of your collection, the average bitrate, and other 
  213.       noteworthy details :)
